The power of persistence
Monica first started noticing symptoms in 2020. She had been teaching youth tennis clinics and needed more breaks than usual. “The fatigue made it hard to move to the ball,” she says. “Sometimes, I would see 2 tennis balls.”
She knew this was more than ordinary tiredness. “As an athlete, I’ve always been attuned to my body. And these symptoms were big changes.” But a clear diagnosis didn’t come right away. She visited several neurologists before she found one that recognized her symptoms and diagnosed her with gMG.
“If you’re not feeling how you think you should be feeling, you have to advocate for yourself,” says Monica. “For me, that meant not giving up until I had an answer. I found a neurologist who could be a partner in my treatment.”
